DMV Eye Exam

If your license is expiring soon or if you are applying for your first New York State driver’s license, our eye care providers can help. We’re qualified and available to perform the DMV eye test, making the process of getting or renewing a driver’s license a whole lot easier.

The New York DMV Eye Test

To help ensure your safety and that of others on the road, New York State mandates a vision test for every driver’s license.

  • If your visual acuity is 20/40 or better without corrective lenses, your driver’s license will not indicate any restrictions
  • If you need corrective lenses, including eyeglasses or contacts, to pass the vision test, your license will include a “B” restriction. This restriction merely indicates that you must wear your corrective lenses while driving.

As skilled vision care providers, we’re also qualified to assess prospective or renewing drivers with low vision. For individuals with significant refractive errors who wear telescopic lenses, we’ll fill in the complete eye test report as required by DMV’s Medical Review Unit to evaluate a driver’s license application for any special restrictions. Drivers who are determined to have difficulty seeing at night may also have a “daylight only driving” restriction added to their driver’s license.

It’s also worth noting that if our eye test demonstrates improvements in eyesight, our vision care professionals can also help remove the driving restrictions from your license.  We’ll fill out the necessary forms for the DMV to indicate your visual acuity has improved, or that you no longer rely on telescopic lenses.
